Turbocharger Condition: Check for excessive play in the turbine shaft and oil residue on the blades (to prevent oil burning into the intake manifold).
Cooling System Marks: Check the cylinder head for scale or rust. If the cylinder head deforms due to overheating in the 4D33, repair costs are very high.
Starting Smoke Color: Blue smoke indicates oil burning, black smoke indicates a malfunction in the fuel injection system (fuel pump/nozzle), and white smoke may indicate coolant entering the combustion chamber.
Piston Pin Bushing: This is a common potential weakness in the 4D33. Listen carefully for any abnormal knocking sounds.
